How to get licensed as a Realtor in North Carolina.

Real estate brokers in North Carolina are licensed by the North Carolina Real Estate Commission. Every new broker follows the same six steps.

  1. 1

    Complete the 75-hour prelicensing course

Take the Broker Prelicensing Course from a Commission-certified school and pass its end-of-course exam. Your course completion stays valid for three years.

  2. 2

    Order your criminal record report

Order it from CriminalRecordCheck.com, the only vendor the Commission accepts. It can be no more than six months old when you apply.

  3. 3

    Apply to the Commission

File your license application with the Commission. Review typically takes five to seven business days; then you receive your Notice of Exam Eligibility by email.

  4. 4

    Pass the state licensing exam

Schedule with Pearson VUE. The exam has two sections, and you need a 75 or higher on each. You have 180 days from your eligibility notice to pass both; the window cannot be extended.

  5. 5

    Receive your license

Your license is typically issued within seven to ten business days of passing, longer if a character review is needed. You start as an inactive Provisional Broker.

  6. 6

    Affiliate with a Broker-in-Charge

To practice, you need a Broker-in-Charge to sponsor you and file your affiliation (Form REC 2.08). Provisional Brokers work under that supervision. This is where Nobilis comes in.

Something in your background?

If you are unsure whether a past matter could affect your application, you can ask the Commission for a pre-determination before you invest in the course.
